Frequently Asked Questions

What is fish hydrolysate?

Fish hydrolysate is a nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer made from fish parts (such as bones, skin, and other remains) through an enzymatic or fermentation process that breaks down the fish into a more accessible form. Unlike fish emulsion, which is heated and has some of the proteins and oils removed, fish hydrolysate retains most of the natural oils, proteins, amino acids, and other nutrients found in whole fish, making it a more nutrient-dense product.

The process to create fish hydrolysate often involves grinding the fish into a slurry and adding enzymes or using beneficial microorganisms to break it down. This results in a product that is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients that plants need for healthy growth. Additionally, the beneficial oils and proteins in fish hydrolysate can enhance soil microbial life, boosting soil health and plant resilience.

Fish hydrolysate is used in organic farming as a soil drench, foliar spray, or compost additive

How often do I use it?

Fish hydrolysate can be applied at different frequencies depending on the type of plants you’re growing and the specific goals you have for soil or plant health. General recommendations are as follows:

Compost additive: When using fish hydrolysate in compost, it can be applied whenever new layers are added to the compost pile to speed up decomposition and boost microbial activity.

Vegetables, fruits, and herbs: Apply every 2-4 weeks during the growing season. This ensures that plants receive a steady supply of nutrients to promote growth and fruiting.

Lawns and turf: Apply every 4-6 weeks to maintain healthy grass, especially during the growing season.

Flowers and ornamentals: Apply every 4-6 weeks to support healthy blooms and foliage.

Trees and shrubs: For newly planted trees or shrubs, apply every 2-4 weeks during the first growing season. For established plants, a few times a year (spring, summer, and fall) is typically sufficient.

What do I use it for?

Fish hydrolysate is used primarily as an organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. Here are its key applications:

Widely used in organic farming as it is a natural, sustainable source of nutrients that improves soil health and plant vigor without synthetic chemicals.

Nutrient-Rich Fertilizer:

Fish hydrolysate provides essential nutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), along with trace minerals (calcium, magnesium, sulfur) and amino acids. These nutrients support healthy plant growth, improve root development, and increase yield in crops.

Soil Microbial Activity:

It boosts soil microbial populations, especially beneficial bacteria and fungi. This improved microbial activity helps break down organic matter, making nutrients more available to plants and enhancing soil fertility over time.

Soil Drench:

Applied directly to the soil, fish hydrolysate enriches the soil’s organic matter, improves soil structure, and increases moisture retention. It also feeds beneficial microbes that enhance soil health and plant growth.

Foliar Spray:

When used as a foliar spray, fish hydrolysate allows plants to absorb nutrients directly through their leaves. This can improve plant resilience, enhance disease resistance, and promote faster growth.

Compost Accelerator:

It accelerates the decomposition process when added to compost, increasing the availability of nutrients and producing high-quality compost in a shorter time.

Promotes Plant Resilience:

Fish hydrolysate contains natural oils and proteins that can help plants resist pests, diseases, and environmental stresses like drought or temperature fluctuations.

Organic Farming:

Widely used in organic farming as it is a natural, sustainable source of nutrients that improves soil health and plant vigor without synthetic chemicals.

How much do I dilute it?

The dilution ratio for fish hydrolysate depends on the specific application. Here are general guidelines for dilution:

Dilute 3-4 ounces per gallon of water (roughly 1:40) and apply evenly using a sprayer or watering can. This ensures the lawn gets a boost in nutrients and improves microbial health in the soil.

Soil Drench:

Dilute 1-2 droppers of fish hydrolysate per gallon of water (1:100 or 1:50 dilution ratio). Apply this solution to the base of plants to enrich the soil and promote healthy root development.

Foliar Spray:

Dilute 1 dropper of fish hydrolysate per gallon of water (1:100 dilution ratio). Spray it on the leaves in the early morning or late afternoon to allow for better absorption and reduce the risk of burning the leaves in direct sunlight.

Compost Additive:

You can dilute it 1:50 (1 part fish hydrolysate to 50 parts water) and sprinkle the solution over compost piles to accelerate decomposition.

Lawns:

Dilute 2 ounces per gallon of water and apply evenly using a sprayer or watering can. This ensures the lawn gets a boost in nutrients and improves microbial health in the soil.

What is in it?

Our process starts with extracting lactobacillus cultures from locally sourced milk and combining it with organic sugar. All that is required after that is combining this ingredients with the carp and water and letting it ferment from 2-6 months.
